Overview

Students have lectures on Monday evenings (7.00 pm - 10.00 pm) over a period of 2 years. There may be opportunities to get involved in the Earls Court Community Project.

Course recognition

This course is recognised as providing a minimum of 200 Guided Learning Hours and is accredited with the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC) as a Level 3 counselling training ("Preparation for Counselling Practitioner").

Note: In order to gain full accreditation as a "Counselling Practitioner with ACC", further training and counselling supervised practice are required.

Admission requirements

No formal academic qualifications are required but applicants will need to be able to demonstrate a God given heart to work with broken and hurting people, particularly in inner cities. Applicants will need to show interest in learning more about counselling and in developing the personal, professional and spiritual qualities involved in the practice of Christian counselling.

The CCS is an English speaking school and counselling requires the ability to recognise fine shades of meaning. It is therefore essential that applicants have a good command of English and are able to understand and communicate well in English. (Written and oral)

Curriculum

Over the two years the lectures will cover some basic concepts within counselling and the central place of the Holy Spirit as the Counsellor. Lectures will also explore some Christian and secular models of counselling, the specific issues people have when coming for counselling and how these can be addressed.

Some of the topics covered:

  • Foundations to counselling from a Christian perspective
  • Counselling models including: Egan's Skilled Helper Model, Theophostic Prayer Ministry and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Counselling Skills
  • Ethics and Professional Issues
  • Cross-Cultural Counselling
  • Loss and Bereavement
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Addictions
  • Eating Disorders
  • Codependency
  • Self-Esteem
  • Pregnancy & Post-Abortion
  • Abuse
  • Marriage and Family
  • Sexuality
  • Counselling Couples & Families
  • Occult and helping clients resolving spiritual conflicts

The teaching timetable may be subject to change and other topics may be added. Speakers include visiting lecturers who are experts in their chosen field, local Christians involved in urban ministries and school staff. Throughout the two years, the evenings will be split between teaching and practising counselling skills.

Support for Students

Counselling teaching invariably brings up issues in the lives of students. The understanding from lectures on Monday evenings and the processing through personal learning journals often brings healing, but there is not sufficient time to cover individual students pastorally. Should it be necessary, we will help students find help outside the school structure.

Learning Resources

The CCS library holds a range of books in counselling and other related subject areas.

Personal Study

There is an expectation that students are self motivated in their studies. An initial reading list will be provided following acceptance on the course and students will be required to read a number of books throughout the two years.
Over the length of the course students will be required to invest two to three hours of personal study each week. This includes time spent on reading, writing essays, personal learning journal, counselling practice and tutorials.

Assessment

Assignments will be a mixture of written and practical work. Over the length of the school students are expected to complete regular course work and assignments, keep a weekly Personal Learning Journal, complete a small research project and submit a video-tape in which they demonstrate their counselling skills.

Attendance

To successfully complete the course, students need to pass all units and have a minimum 85% attendance.
