Who is the training for?

This training is ideal for Christian counsellors who work with couples experiencing sexual difficulties or wish to enhance their intimate relationship. It is also relevant for counsellors working with individuals seeking to overcome sexual addictions.
No formal academic qualifications are required but we reserve the right to refuse admission to anyone whom we consider unsuitable for the course.

Who runs the training?

This training is offered by David Hall and Michael Sytsma from the Institute for Sexual Wholeness (USA) and hosted by ECCP Training (YWAM).

David is a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Licensed Professional Counsellor (LPC). He holds his Masters degree from Richmont Graduate University and is completing his Doctorate in Psychology. David is a member of the the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists (ABCST) specializing in male sexual health, sexual identity, and teenage development. He is part of the development of international training for the Institute for Sexual Wholeness.

Michael is a pastor, marital sex therapist, and speaker. He is an ordained minister in The Wesleyan Church, a Licensed Professional Counselor, and Certified Sex Therapist. He holds a Marriage & Family Therapy PhD from the University of Georgia where he studied Marital Sexuality focusing on sexual desire discrepancy in marriage. He is founder and lead therapist for Building Intimate Marriages, Inc. (http://IntimateMarriage.org) and Executive Director for Sexual Wholeness, Inc. where he leads the training of several hundred professional sex therapists.

Course Hours

This course provides 21 Guided Learning Hours. These hours may be used as CPD hours or to work towards applying for accreditation with the Association of Christian Counsellors ACC. (E.g. CCS graduates may use the offered training hours to work towards applying for accreditation with ACC. However, in order to gain full accreditation as a "Counselling Practitioner with ACC", further training hours and counselling practice under supervision are required.)

B. Christian integration: a theology of sex

C. The DEC-R model for sexual counselling

D. The counsellor’s sexual integrity and client boundaries in the context of sex counselling

Section 1 of DEC-R- “Dialogue”

A. The language of sex therapy

1. Terminology

2. How to effectively engage clients in open discussion regarding issues that are probably very difficult for them to discuss

3. How to conduct a thorough sexual assessment

Section 2 of DEC-R- “Educate”

A. Basic sexual anatomy and physiology for the sex counsellor

B. Models of sexual response

C. How sexuality and sexual functioning changes over the lifespan

D. Gender and gender identity

E. Sexual behaviors

F. Sexual values

Section 3 of DEC-R- “Coach”

A. Addressing the client’s presenting sexual issue

B. Treatment of sexual issues

C. How to use therapeutic manuals and protocols

Section 4 of DEC-R- “Referral”

A. This is the most important part of counselling sexual issues

B. How and when to incorporate other professionals such as physicians, physical therapists and other community health resources

C. Understand your limitations

D. How to refer effectively

E. Sex Therapy resources for counsellors

Lee Abbey is very conveniently situated in Kensington in West London with good transport links to most destinations around London. Kensington is a quiet residential area with excellent shops, museums and parks a short distance away.

Please note: There is very limited metered parking near Lee Abbey – most parking is for resident permit holders only.

Getting to Lee Abbey

By Car
Lee Abbey is in West London, just off the Cromwell Road and High Street Kensington, not far from the A4 and A40 motorways into London. We do not recommend travelling to Lee Abbey by car if possible as parking is limited and Lee Abbey is just within the congestion charging zone.

From Heathrow Airport
Take the underground (Piccadilly line) from Heathrow to Earls Court station. At the station take the Earls Court Road exit and turn left. Cross over Cromwell Road and Lexham Gardens is the first right. Lee Abbey is number 57-67.

From Victoria Station
Take the underground District Line train to Earls Court.

From Liverpool Street Station
Take the Circle Line to High Street Kensington. Lee Abbey is a short walk.
